Viewing the PBS documentary “Immigrant High” was an eye-opening experience. Throughout my High school years, I never believed that my school had any type of ELL adaption. Due to this class my curiosity grew and, therefore, I reached out to an old teacher. Only to find out my high school is known for its wonderful English Language Learner adaptations. I started to think back and realized that several of the kids in my class were definitely a part of the ELL program. While watching this documentary, the true greatness of having a whole school focused on English Language learners is great. This is something that several other school districts should try to take on. The school that was featured was located in Queens New York. The real reason this school was started up was due to the increasing amount of immigrants in the area. Two of these people were considered undocumented. While the girl had overcome a lot of adversity including cancer. The opening scene of this documentary truly stuck out to me. It was the young boy getting ready for high school graduation. He and his mom were both speaking Spanish to each other while he was asking for help with his tie. It was eye-opening that this young kid who had limited English proficiency was able to walk down the aisle and receive a diploma. What was even more heartwarming is the fact that he was discussing his future college education? This young boy was set out to reach his goal. I believe that if he was not given the opportunity at this great school he would not be where he is today. Rather, he would be out on the streets struggling to obtain an entry-level job due to his language
