Parents, we all have to deal with them. It is even difficult to do so if they are immigrants. Contrary to popular belief, there are some advantages in having immigrant parents. For example, Immigrant parents don’t comprehend the idea of privacy. They are often shocked to hear that other parents don’t monitor their children 24/7; always amazed that my friends can go out on their own without a guardian. Although this might sound miserable it has a positive side. Since they know every single detail about me, there is a high amount of trust and comfort between me and my parents.
However, the greatest advantage of having immigrant parents must the constant comparison of life in America against the home country.

“I get it, I am entitled. I should be more grateful.” Guilt had washed over me, I couldn’t come up with an excuse this time.
“Do you? I know I talk it about it a lot but, you’re so lucky. And not just compared to my experiences. Just now, if many people were in your situation, they wouldn’t have a warm and cozy homes to return to.” He said, looking at me. “Do you realize how many people aren’t aware of such things as Air conditioners?” When I didn’t answer, he continued. “It isn’t just the big things you need to be grateful for. It’s also the small details that make your life so easy. If you could just take time to just acknowledge these thing, you would be better off.”
It was unlike my dad to get quickly upset over little issues. So, I know I had hit a nerve. With surprise and shame, I said nothing during the rest of the car ride.
Although the car ride had been memorable, it isn’t what I think of before I begin to complain about an issue. It is rather the feeling of the humid flow of air on my face when I enter my house that day that makes me think
