During the late 19th century through the 20th century ethnicity was still a big problem in America. With more and more immigrants coming through and many gaining more rights than before America had to put citizens into categories. Within occupations and politics there was really no equal treatment and has caused different points of views.
Coming to politics first with voting views. In document 1 it shows how politics thought. Saying that immigration puts a heavy toll on voting because they contain a liquor vote, catholic vote, Mormon vote etc. how immigrants are in cities and all around America and that they created socialism around the nation so they're vote was important. Politicians and candidates focused one that fact. For example the places in the states with the most immigrants (north east) had the most electoral votes but were also the most population was located at ,creating a loop hole through elections.
Another thing was how people of different ethnicities were treated. In document 4 with the Plessy vs ferguson case ruling separate but equal. But nothing was never really equal. Whites still treated blacks poorly especially in the south after Dr.Booker T Washington ate at the White House. Blacks in the south population decreased rapidly due to lynchings. As shown in document 6 the population of blacks decreased fast with every year. Thus creating tensions between faces of the black community. For example Washington wanted blacks to educate themselves to fight back and compete with whites and other races. But not all blacks Felt that way, such as W.E.B Du Bois who criticized Washington. His views were African Americans can't climb the economic ladder with their political rights
