Imperialism is when one country or nation that is larger the others take over smaller countries for their land and natural resources. Following the death of Napoleon, a new age began — New Imperialism — which marked a new imperial attitude in Europe. The age of New Imperialism lasted to roughly 1914. During this age, there were many impacts in various regions around the world. Most European countries owned land in Africa and Asia, which resulted in cultural issues and tension with the citizens of former regions/territories.

It’s no surprise that when Europeans started to arrive in Africa and Asia the people of those places started to feel annoyed of their presence and cultural difference. Often times Europeans would attempt to change the cultures of certain people or places and that obviously didn’t go by well by the people of Africa and Asia. “By hundreds of differences in our daily customs.” (Document 8). What the Vietnamese mean by this is that they are separated from the French by “hundreds of differences” in their daily customs. It was fairly common for a European country to change cultural customs in a region once they gained control it. India is a perfect example of it. The Indians had many of their customs removed once the British arrived. Britain was much stronger of a force, though, so the Indians had no choice but to follow the British. They were forced to look up to them as their owners as they had no choice and couldn’t really fight back. All this can be seen in the picture in Document 7.

During the age of New Imperialism, there were many impacts in various regions around the world. Most European countries owned land in Africa and Asia, which resulted in cultural issues and tension with the citizens of former regions/territories. Some areas were open to change and were influenced by European countries in positive ways, however, most regions didn’t respond well to the arrival of Europeans and didn’t like them trying to change their daily customs.
