When I was watching Hotel Rwanda, even though I had seen it before, I was still surprised by many things that happened. I knew that it was considered a genocide, but I did not realize that around 1 million people died. I also did not remember that they had all the Europeans and Americans leave, but it did make sense that they would want citizens to leave such a dangerous country. It was really horrible to see all of the bodies and especially that they were targeting the children. Watching what Paul did for all these people made me think that Paul is a very honorable person. He could have just focused on saving his family and abandoned the hotel, but him staying there to help the refugees despite the dangers is very selfless. Another thing that I was surprised by was what Janet Reno said when she was talking about whether or not it was a genocide. Based on how many people of a specific group had been killed, I would definitely have said it was a genocide. Lastly, I also wondered why they chose to resort to killing an entire group. It would have been so much better if they had tried to work harder to figure out a compromise, but instead the fighting broke out. I think that if imperialism in Africa had never really happened, the Rwandan genocide would likely have never occurred. …show more content…
I do not think that this is needed all the time, but when a genocide like this is happening, it is most likely going to be necessary for others to step in in order for it to stop. In the case of the Rwandan genocide, I especially think that European countries should step in because what they did caused many of the problems in the country. I also think that even if an event will not affect a country directly, they should still try to help other countries in order to keep more peace around the
