CHAPTER 2

ART IN EVERYDAY LIFE

• The artifact must be ornamented to achieve its desired “art quality”.
• If an art piece is beautiful in shape, color and texture it is always apt for a space.
• Decoration is equal to simplicity, as access of anything doesn’t fits to achieve its desired quality.
• `Balance.
• While designing any object following points should be covered: shape, purpose and material.
• For furniture design, more than decoration of that product its stability, its structure is more important. Proportion.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

HARMONY

• Harmony is required in a lot of good works where appearance as well as use has to be considered.
• Harmony is the most important design principles.
• Selection and arrangement (placement) of any

In a space one wont be aware even when it is present but if there is some misbalance in a space it will be very evidently seen and the subconscious discomfort could be felt.
• “Balance is rest or repose. This restful effect is obtained by grouping shapes and colors around a center in such a way that there are equal attractions on each side of that center.”
• Balance in design can be easily explained considering balance of weight. Any one can understand the importance of balance by understanding the balance in a seesaw.
• It has always been observed that center is like the point of attraction in a space; it acts like a magnet where all other objects and elements repels or attracts. If the objects are equally forceful in appearance and are placed at equal distance, they tend to attract the same amount of attention.
• These facts are proved in design using color, which is the most important element of design.
• When objects are divided equally considering the center, there is equal amount of attraction from all the sides; this kind of balance is called a formal balance, which has quiet, dignified, and précised attributes. (Example for formal

It is graceful, spontaneous and energetic. It has a story to reveal. In other words we can say rhythm as a movement, but it should be noted that all movement in design are not rhythmic.
• In design paths are defined using rhythm as a tool, a path in which eye travels in the line, form and color of the space.
• A relative path, a relative movement, connections and continuations are very well expressed using rhythm in design. The lines and patterns defined through Color in a space gives restless or energetic feeling. Rhythm can be very well achieved through repetition of shapes, progression of sizes and continuous line movement.
• When a shape is repeated at regular intervals, the movement of eyeball becomes smooth. In a forest also one can experience this continuity, nature is the best example to experience the sequential rhythm.
• Gestalt principle “progression” is another way through which rhythm in a space can be achieved. Progression of sizes of the elements used in a space. Compositions are showed through rhythm generated through continuous lines, which forms a curve. Rhythmical gradations are discovered through beauty of sequence in the movement of the
