To be an American is to work hard to achieve those promises America offers, to be proud of being part of this country and it's freedoms. America isn't just a country who gives, one has to be willing to work for those dreams those freedoms. Being proud of America is also a big part to define what it means to be an American. "America was a land of living, hope, woven of dreams, a flame with longing and desire" found in the story America and I is a good meaning on the country of America. Being American isn't easy, infact it's the opposite if you truly want to be an American. We have the example of Anzia Yezierska and her struggles when she came to America "learning new words, the children, the groccer, the butcher, the iceman." Anzia Yezierska's words demonstrate an example of hard working towards being an American because she didn't know english but she put an effort and learned from the children or the iceman. Being an American isn't of just one race, Americans are of mixed races. In the story, What is an American we have a good example of how American's are "whose grandfather was an englishman whose wife was dutch, whose son married a french woman." That quote shows how in just one family you have so many different cultures and "he is an American …show more content…
In the story, Veterans Day: Never Forget Thier Duty, we have a patriotic example of Mike Christain a soldier who fought for America but was captured in Vietname. "Sewes the American flag on the inside of his shirt" in that quote we have a great example on being an American because when he was captured he never forgot about his country instead he made the flag to remind himself who he's fighting for.
