The five versions of In a Sentimental Mood have many similarities and differences. The songs use different instruments, tempos, and one of them contains lyrics. The original song was produced by Duke Ellington and four more artists followed and made their version of the song. The four other artists are Django Reinhardt, Sonny Rollings, Sarah Vaughan, and Bill Evans. They all had a different approach to making the song that complimented their style of play. The original song was meant to create a sense of sadness and depression for the listener. It was written in a period of the great depression. The other performers were Milt Jackson on the vibraphone, John Lewis on the piano, Perry Heath on the bass, and Kenny Clarke on the drums. Sonny Rollings mainly uses low pitches in the song. He also changes the tempo throughout the song and uses different notes to play different sounds. The way the vibraphone was played helped display a higher tone for the band. The other instruments were also played quieter when the vibraphone started playing toward the end of the song. This was to help it have a more distinctive sound to it. The guitar was the main instrument that was used and it provided the rhythm. Her voice is very soft which sets the tone of the song. The lyrics sounded like she was getting over a tough relationship by the way she carried each note. The guitar plays slow notes and a low pitch, which helped guide her notes. The guitar provides a soft sound that was needed to compliment her soft and mellow voice. It helped create the perfect vibe for the song.
