Truman Capote, in the crime-fiction novel In Cold Blood, shows that an individual is controlled by nurture when it comes to criminal activity through the character of Perry Smith. Capote argues that Perry Smith’s terrible childhood was filled with bad situations which turned him into the criminal he was. Smith’s abusive childhood, lack of education and problem-filled family all added up to a very psychotic criminal. Perry Smith did nothing wrong to deserve the pain and agony he went through at a young age. “What she used to do, she’d fill a tub with ice-cold water, put me
