In “In Dreams Begin Responsibilities,” Delmore Schwartz works with themes of ambition, relationship, and anger. He does this through father, the symbol of merry-go-round, and son. The author is trying to say loveless marriage is the tragic origin of a family. Father has strong desire about money and power. He marries a trophy wife so that he can show off at parties. “My father thinks of my mother, of how lady-like he is, and of the pride which will be his when he introduces her to his family” (2). Also, no matter where he is and what person, he is talking about money. “My father tells my mother how much money he has made in the week just past” (3). He has a dream of succeeding in his business and strives for achieving his dream. “My father tells my mother that he is going to expand his business, for there is a great deal of money to be made” (4). Son isn’t treated well because there is always something terrible happening to the parents after they are married. “Nothing good will come of it, only remorse, hatred, scandal, and two children whose characters are monstrous” (4). He wants attention and cares from his parents, but they ignore him. “Overhead the sun’s lightning strikes and strikes, but neither of them are at all aware of it” (3). His father despises him because father thinks he is not outstanding as him and he gets everything he wants without working hard. “My father has always felt that actualities somehow fall short, no matter how fine they are. Suddenly I [son] begin to weep” (3). Broken marriage always brings serious impacts on children. The author is saying people don’t care about their family if they are married without love. Father, the symbol of darkness, and son prove how family can be destroyed by shattered marriage. If people want a happy marriage and family life, they have to find someone they love and
