The classic western movie In Old Oklahoma is one of the lesser known westerns. Although it is a lesser known movie, it stars one of the most famous actors of all time, John Wayne. In Old Oklahoma has several memorable characters. In any old western movies there are characters who need further investigation and realization, but we are going to work with In Old Oklahoma. This movie has a broad range of characters ranging from the girl in peril, Catherine Allen, to the funky old guy, Despirit Dean. The movie has the antagonist, Jim Gardner, and the protagonist, Daniel Somers, played by the world renowned John Wayne. For all intents and purposes of this paper, we will be focusing on the protagonist of the film, Daniel Somers—played by the infamous John Wayne. John Wayne’s characters appeal to the American people through his “wartime masculinity” (VanMeter 23). Daniel Somers is any woman’s dream with his sarcastic comments, his looks, his masculinity—Daniel Somers is the ultimate man.

The train arrives in Sapulpa, but Daniel and Catherine choose to continue onto Kansas City, however they miss their chance to get off of the caboose. After Daniel and Catherine do not exit the caboose in time to continue their journey, this is where the love triangle among Daniel, Catherine, and Jim begins. However this is not your average love triangle where the men just have a pissing contest to win a girl's heart. Dr. VanMeter writes, “In most love triangle narratives, the woman is a negligible presence.” While Catherine appears as a strong, independent woman, the writers keep her in the “girl in peril” misogynistic stance for the sake of keeping Daniel as the “hero” who saves the
