In the epitaph “Minerva Jones” by Edgar Lee Masters in “Spoon River Anthology,” I learned that Minerva Jones is the poetess of her village but she has a sort not average look and so the villagers make her feel as if she doesn't fit in. The person Minerva speaks about is Doctor Meyers whom she was left with after she was caught. At that point in Minerva’s life she cared not about anything else but for attention drawn to her poets for them to be recognized. The epitaph of “Butch’ Weldy” i learn that he is just a regular man who works each day doing a dangerous job and soon faces an accident. He had a wife and kids raised well, he wasn’t rich but he wasn’t poor either he was a good person. In the poem he reference to Minerva Jones who comes to him for help but dies. This shows that the social values at that time were very high if you messed up one bit you’d be shunned. In “Mrs. Meyers” we can observe that he was on the side with her husband she knew the truth, the truth where doctor Meyers tried to help Minerva Jones but she didn’t make it through. She tries to help him see that the rest are wrong but he’s too consumed. Her relationship to the rest is a friend but wife of Doctor Meyers. We can infer that you could not change the minds of all at that time, even with the truth. Some things you can learn about the speaker of “Indignation’ Jones” is that he was the father of Minerva Jones and they both had cancer for that was the reason she died. He was also from a place where they are considered whiter than the whites themselves. He speaks about his wife and Minerva who is his daughter.
