Rafael Trujillo, a Dominican politician and soldier who ruled the Dominican Republic for thirty-one years, had spies and informers that lead the people of the country to be distrusting. As a dictator, Trujillo was responsible for various undignified and unsophisticated accomplishments. The characters of the novel “In the Time of the Butterflies”, written by Julia Alvarez, somehow find a way to overcome their fears of their leader and find those who are courageous enough to try and make a change. The women in this novel’s choice is not to die, yet decide that a revolution is essential enough to risk their lives showing us the courage that comes from within. The author describes to us with symbolism and characterization of how the Mirabal sisters often struggled with their recognizable roles as traditional women who do not take part in politics or in the public eye. The sisters struggle to fight to take their right of freedom in the Dominican Republic. To win this freedom, the Mirabal sisters had to give up their safety, their childhoods, and their lives. The novel describes to us courageous women whose sole purpose was to fight for not just their rights but everyones god-given rights. Julia Alvarez chooses to start the novel at the end, essentially telling us how the story ends. We are given a claim of the fate of the characters. Though the Mirabal sisters know that rebelling against their powerful leader could bring a fiasco of dilemmas, their fear does not stop them in any way. Courage is portrayed throughout the book showing how that when times get tough they have to fight to keep their courage.
