Alexie Novel Essay

Cultural anthropologist and Jungian scholar, Joseph Campbell writes about "the Hero's Journey" or the monomyth concept in his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Many other Authors as well as Movie directors use the formula to organize the stories of their Heros. In this formula, Campbell includes the idea that every hero needs a mentor/amulet. Sherman Alexie's Novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian, the main character, Junior has three important mentors through his journey of teenage life: Mr.P, Junior's grandmother and Junior's basketball coach. This bildungsroman novel highlights how mentors can affect a hero's decisions and actions that he makes.
Mr. P, Junior’s teacher affect Junior’s decision to transfer to Reardan and to not give up his dream. In the Chapter “Hope Against Hope”, Mr. P talks to Junior about not letting the adversities that he faces affect him. He explains to Junior that his sister gave up on her dream and that he should not. Mr. P says to Junior, “And you’re a bright and shining star, too... You’re the smartest kid in school. And I don’t want you to fail. I don’t want you to fade away. You deserve better” (Alexie 40). This show how Mr. P is Junior’s mentor because he does not want him to fail. In the chapter “Like a lion”, Junior is playing his old school in basketball and his coach say “You can do it” multiple times through the chapter. (Alexie 189) Junior says “ It’s the simplest sentence in the word, just four words, but they’re the four hughest words in the world when they’re put together” (Alexie 189).
