Individual Literary Analysis Essay “In your mind you've already succumbed to me dropped all defenses completely succumbed to me - now you are here with me: no second thoughts, you've decided, decided . . .” The Phantom sang this to Christine during The Point of No Return. Christine Betrayed The Phantom multiple times shortly after this point in the story. She betrayed him by leaving him for Raoul and more small details regarding that along the way. Christine being betrayed by her Angel of Music adds meaning to the story and changes the mood of the story. Throughout the play, Christine back stabs The Phantom of The Opera many times. After Christine’s dad died, The Angel of Music came to lead her through life and make it easier for her. However, Christine took this to her advantage. Christine used The Phantom until she got what she wanted, a good part in the play. After she got the part, she kicked The Phantom to the curb. The Phantom generously gave her his music and she didn’t show any gratitude towards him and took all he had done for her for granted. This represents Christine leaving The Phantom to pursue a life with Raoul. Christine sees protection in Raoul that she doesn’t see in The Phantom so I doubt that she meant to drop the rose, it just represents her moving on and when the Phantom saw this from behind the statue, it broke his heart. This is the turning point of the story (the climax), this changes the mood completely because now we know who Christine really wants to be with and who she is meant for.
