Individuality Vs. Conformity The article, Individuality Vs. Conformity: The issue behind school uniforms, includes and discusses debates about whether school uniforms help create a safe environment or not. The school officials, some parents, etc. believe that school uniforms can help create a safe environment for students as well as keep them in the school system. Other advocates oppose their viewpoints and says students wearing uniforms will not cause a dramatic change in the school system. However, school systems have reported a growing progress within their school systems for students wearing uniforms. With supportive details about each argument, the reader is able to view both sides enough to choose who they agree with.
Advantages of Uniforms The Long Beach Unified School District (the first public school system in the country to require students to wear uniforms) speak of many advantages they see in their school system due to the uniform policy. Officials in the district report large increases in attendance and test scores as well as decreases in gang-related crimes and discipline problems. Amongst 58,500 students they see a steady increase. One district spokesperson states that “Uniforms really level the playing field between the have and have-nots”.

When students wore particular colors that were seen as “gang-related” it brought more crimes into the school. Now, that students have to wear a certain color coded attire it lessens the crimes brought into the school. Another argument was that while some students can afford to buy new clothing others can’t.
