Industrialization was a big part of how our country was built. Industrialization is when new industries like factories are built in a new area. Without factories we wouldn’t have any transportation, appliances for our house, or any materials to build anything. What are the costs and benefits of industrialization? The benefits of industrialization are easy work and mass production of materials, while the costs are child labor and long working hours. The benefits or good things about industrialization are for one mass production of items. Like for example, steel and lumber for houses, clothing items like shoes or pants, and other household items. Another pro of industrialization is easy work. Or as said by Edward Baines said in 1835 “It is scarcely possible for any job to be lighter. The Position of the body is not injurious: the children walk about, and have opportunity to sit down frequently if they want to” (Baines Document D). Edward Baines was elected to parliament, he was saying in that quote was that the work in the factories was easy and light work. In this case the costs of the industrialization outweigh the benefits. One reason why the costs outweigh the benefits is the child labor. Even though the source in paragraph one said the workload was light, my source in the second paragraph stated the children suffered many injuries like cut of limbs. Another reason why the costs outweigh the benefits is because of the long working hours. Even though one of the benefits of industrialization is mass production in turn it causes the workers (children) to work twelve plus hours a day everyday.
