What I am about to tell you is highly classified and is never to be repeated to anyone, the vice president does not even know this project exists. I am under orders from the President of the Unites States and this top secret facility will be my home away from home for the next eight weeks. This is where I will be trained to drop the first Atomic Bomb. Six months ago I was on my way to England to fly B-17 Flying Fortresses for the British Royal Army. I was quickly named the commanding officer of the “340th Bomb Squadron, 97th Bomb Group. I have already flown more than 25 combat missions over Europe and I piloted the first B-17 in the North African invasion over Algeria” (Timmons). I am the pilot, my co-pilot is Captain Robert Lewis and my bombardier is Major Thomas Ferebee. “I am selected to be in command of the newly formed 509th Composite Group” (Timmons). We are a crew of eleven consisting of the best of the best. We are going to be trained to drop the first Atomic bomb off of United States soil. The secret facility we stayed at is called the Manhattan Project. “I am in command of 15 B-29’s and 1,800 men at Wendover Army Air Field in Utah” (Timmons). The Atomic bomb wasn’t actually here, there is a rumor it was being built and tested somewhere in New Mexico but everything is so classified that who knows if it is true. Our training consists of written exams and lectures following with training exercises. We have to learn every part of the B-29, inside and out, and we have a weekly test about operations and the actions to be carried out during emergencies.
