Informative Essay: Is Roy Hobbs An Epic Hero?

Roy Hobbs seems, at first, close to what we defined as classic hero, but he doesn’t quite fit all the parameters that a classic hero would. With the new category “epic hero” I believe Roy Hobbs fits quite a bit closer to this definition. With the first trait being “noble birth” right off the bat (pun unintended) this one doesn't seem to fit Roy Hobbs as his parents weren't anything special other than farmers. If, however, you think about the time frame not whole lot of people would have been born a noble. Instead the the nineteen-forties were all about making your own way. Roy Hobbs is told by his father that Roy is going it be the greatest baseball player to break all the records. This is the destiny created for Roy Hobbs.
Hobbs was capable of great deeds and was a great warrior, traits 2 and 3. Hobbs doesn't only say he's the best, he lives up to it. He takes

There's no denying he has his flaws. Most notably, his pride and lust. His flaws get in the way of him being a classic hero. His lust gets him into trouble because of the women he gets mixed up with, the first one shoots him, and the second one gets in the way of his work.
You could argue that its Roy's pride that causes him to turn down the money and play his last game, but his pride also gets him in trouble. Roy Hobbs’ pride ends up hurting him quite a bit as when he builds his whole life around the pride that he can play baseball until he is shot. After being shot his life goes into disarray, we don't know too much about the in-between time for Roy, but I'm certain it would be hard for him emotionally. His pride also almost got him killed, had he been worse condition after being in the hospital he would have died during his last game. If he had less pride he could have just quit
