The Armenian Genocide was the first genocide in the 20th century and it resulted in the killing of between one to two million Armenians. This all started in April of 1915 when Ottoman soldiers arrested and executed many Armenians in Constantinople. Many of these people were intellectuals, professionals, and clergy members. After this attack, the authorities started to round up and kill the merchant and trade classes. By the Fall of 1915, death marches had spread throughout the land and into the Armenian villages. This ultimately wiped out the middle and lower class. This genocide is rarely taught in public schools and the stories of these Armenian people should not be forgotten. Despite the horrendous conditions these people were put through, they managed to remain hopeful. Their hopefulness can be found in many artifacts they held on to during their gruesome tale, such as Bibles, Handwritten manuscripts, and other personal items such as a slave collar. The majority of these Armenians brutally killed in the Armenian Genocide were of Christian faith. The manuscript at the Armenian museum is called “Sasnoy Lernerun Bray T’aparut’ner” (“Wanderings in the mountains of Sasun”). It is 292 pages and it is by Dr. N. Baghdayan in 1918. This weathered manuscript was written in daily and has led many historians to understand the true conditions of the death marches in the early 1900s.
