Chewing tobacco is a dentist’s nightmare. I think that using dip is a nasty habit that should not exist. I know two people personally who dip, and whenever the topic is brought up in front of others, they are ashamed to admit they do it and even deny it. Many people die each year and millions is spent on surgeries to remove jaws and tongues, which causes a lot of pain for the addicted person and their families. Chewing tobacco is tobacco that is not smoked. It is usually sold in the form of a can, and the tobacco is “pinched” with the fingers and “dipped” in between the lip and the gum. The user gets a constant fix of nicotine through the gums this way. Saliva produced from this is either spit out or swallowed. Nothing causes someone to chew tobacco. It is personally their own choice if they want to engage in this behavior. Peer pressure is a big factor in what causes many to start. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, 5.6% of students between grades 6 through 12 used chewing tobacco, and 72.1% used regular tobacco products such as cigars, cigarettes, etc. Without peer pressure, the numbers of users would be drastically lower.

First and foremost, you must understand and accept your addiction. One should decide to quit, and find their reasons to quit, whatever they may be. Then you need to set a date to quit, this will help keep you motivated as you continue to mark the days that you are clean. It is advised that if you are a heavy dipper than nicotine gum would be a good nicotine substitute, but eventually you will need to wean yourself off the gum.
