Have you ever wondered what peanuts are good for besides making peanut butter, and other baked goods? Unbelievably peanuts can be used to make oils for your skin and sometimes can cure diseases, but we would know none of this if it were not for George Washington Carver. George Washington Carver was one of the most influential and inspiring African Ameri-cans in history. It is unknown when his birthday is, but many historians believe that in could be between the years 1860 and 1864. He was born in Diamond, Missouri to his parents Mary and Giles. A slave owner named Moses Carver owned his parents. After George’s birth, raiders who were from Arkansas kidnapped him along with his sister and mother. After they were captured, the raiders sold them in Kentucky and Moses Carver was able to track them down and bring them back to his farm. George broke the bounder for blacks and whites; he proved that blacks were not just unintelligent people, and that they could be intelligent too. He discov-ered cures for different diseases and he used a single plant to make over a dozen products and medications. We study Carver because of his success with plants and his breakthroughs with developing new cures for diseases. We also study him because of the color barrier that he broke during the time he lived in. When he lived, blacks were not treated as equal as whites were and it was believed that the whites were the superior race. That was not the case however; Carver worked his whole life and in the end was credited for everything he deserved.
