It was the ninth state to be admitted to the Union. Before having any contact with the English, about 3,000 Native Americans occupied what eventually became New Hampshire. New Hampshire was first settled in 1623, by a group of English fishermen and in 1629 the name New Hampshire was named by Captain John Mason after Hampshire, England. The current Governor of New Hampshire is Chris Sununu. The state capital is Concord. The state motto is “Live Free or Die,” it comes from a toast written by General John Stark on July 31, 1809. John Stark was New Hampshire’s most famous soldier of the American Revolutionary War. New Hampshire’s State flag consist of the state seal centered on a blue background which shows the water for the harbor of Portsmouth, the seal has the frigate USS Raleigh and is surrounded by a laurel wreath with nine stars which is representing they were the ninth state to join the union.
