The Boston Massacre On March 5th, 1770 tension between British soldiers and the Patriot started to renew. The British, who were labeled as “lobsterbacks”, fought to stop the anger that the Patriots had towards them. The British is made up of police force and the army. When the soldiers were off-duty, they spent their time working at the daily dock which irritated the patriot day laborers. The Patriot’s goal was to relieve the city of British army of occupation. Crowds began to surround the Custom’s House which symbolized the British. Captain Preston, and seven other soldiers were brought to the help stand up to the Patriot. The British believed that they were ordered to fire, confused, they fired into the crowd and resulted into five dead and twelve wounded.

Unfortunately, the eight British couldn’t find anyone that would defend them at trial until John Adams volunteered. The trial included two parts, the first part was the trial for Captain Preston and the second part was the trial for the seven British soldiers. They all pleaded not guilty of murder. Even though there wasn’t much evidence, many witnesses stated that there was a number of clashes between local residents and the British soldiers. At the end of the trial, John Adams stated “Disregard the uniforms, consider them men”, I believe that this is the most important part of the trial. He is standing in front of the court room basically saying that under these uniforms they are one of us, they are no different, and they shouldn’t be hated.
