Doctors Without Borders is an organization that provides medical aid to people in need all over the world. The organization was founded in France in 1971. In this paper I will explain the purpose a goals of Doctors Without Borders. Doctors Without Borders is made up mostly by volunteer doctors, nurses, and journalists from many countries. There are over 25,000 workers in the organization that take part in over 400 programs and they operate in over seventy countries. The organization will use most of their medical staff from the nation they are in but international volunteers are very important. The international volunteers are invaluable when a major disaster happens such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes. The volunteers are able to move quickly into the disaster region and perform important jobs that doctors could not do alone. The workers of Doctors Without Borders often question themselves on why they decided to join the organization instead of working in their home country. A member asks himself, “Am I looking for an adrenaline rush?, Travel or Adventure?, or is it a quest for social justice that compels me?”(Light, 384) There are always questions to be answered or things hard to understand but the workers love what they do and feel they made the right choice joining Doctors Without Borders and helping people in need. The organization uses the term “loi du tapage” which means law of hype (Davey, 531). They go into regions where people are being mistreated or even killed and report on the situation. They hold themselves morally responsible in what they do and so they are not neutral in the politics of the region they are in and they do not negotiate with the oppressive governments.
