Introduction
Cervical laser surgery is a procedure that uses a focused beam of light (laser) to shrink, destroy, or remove tissue from the cervix. You may have this surgery if:
You have a tumor in your cervix.
You have abnormal cells in your cervix that are an early sign of cancer.
Tissue from your cervix is to be tested for signs of disease.
Tell a health care provider about:
Any allergies you have.
All medicines you are taking, including vitamins, herbs, eye drops, creams, and over-the-counter medicines.
Any problems you or family members have had with anesthetic medicines.
Any blood disorders you have.
Any surgeries you have had.
Any medical conditions you have.
Whether you are pregnant or may be pregnant.

For at least 24 hours before the procedure, do not:
Have sex.
Use tampons.
Douche.
Use vaginal creams or medicines.
What happens during the procedure?
To lower your risk of infection, your health care team will wash or sanitize their hands.
You will lie on your back with your feet raised in foot rests.
A device called a speculum will be put into your vagina to hold it open.
You will be given a medicine to numb the area (local anesthetic). You may feel cramping when the medicine is injected.
A magnifying instrument called a colposcope will be put in front of your vagina. It will shine a light on the vagina and cervix.
A solution will be swabbed on your cervix to help your health care provider see the tissue.
A thin, flexible tube called an endoscope will be inserted into your vagina. The laser will be on the end of the endoscope.
The laser will be used to shrink, destroy, or remove the tissue.
A cotton swab soaked in solution may be used to remove any burned or destroyed tissue.
