Introduction
I. Most of the people here are familiar with the phrase, “one for the road”, but are you familiar with the consequences of just “one for the road”? When I was trying to decide on a topic for my speech, I chose the article, One for the Road: A Comparison of Drinking and Driving Behavior Among Younger and Older Adults Involved in Fatal Crashes.

A. The journal article was found in the Journal of Trauma Nursing and published in July of 2015.

B. This article was written by Linda J. Scheetz, an RN and Associate Professor at Lehman College in New York.

C. Scheetz studied factors that led to fatal crashes involving younger and older adults with blood alcohol levels under 0.08%.

IV. There are three main points that I will focus on, the statistics of alcohol related crashes, blood alcohol concentration (BAC), and risk factors already in place before the use of alcohol.

Body

I. A few statistics involving alcohol consumption while driving will be my first main point.

A. Did you know that one person dies almost every hour in the US because they chose to drive under the influence of alcohol? Not only does this threaten motorists, but also pedestrians.

B. In 2009 there were over 10,000 fatalities because drivers were over the legal limit of 0.08%.

C. Even a small amount of alcohol has been known to show some driving impairment which brings me to my second main point.

II. The second main point that I will be discussing is blood alcohol concentration which is also known as BAC.

A. Blood alcohol concentration occurs faster in older adults than in younger adults. This is due to increased body fat and decrease in water concentration as we age.
