“How Development Leads to Democracy” by Ronald Inglebart and Christian Welzel, promotes an idea that development and democracy are linked together through modernization. Now modernization itself is defined, “ a syndrome of social changes linked to industrialization” and thus includes many social, political, economical and even traditional values into consideration ( Inglebart & Welzel 34). As like any other idea there is always a good side and bad side to each idea. I will extract theories, notions and ideas to explain the correlation behind why development leads to a beneficial world, what risks are caused by development, and what is the importance of development itself?

As citizens of the global community and citizens of a well respected democratic country, there should more emphasis on development in developing countries and less developed countries. Modernization is a common good that helps build societies with political and social change, but the most important aspect within modernization is the spread of self worth among societies. If the population of a less developed country becomes able to understand its societal worth, it opens a pathway for democratic ideas and institutions. That alone should be the main reason why development should be important, not because of democracy but the ideals behind it. Development leads to realization of self worth which brings individual respect and ideas to the population as a whole.
