In the movie Inside Out, the director and writer Pete Docter explain how our emotions guide our morals and judgment. Pete Docter uses the personification of each emotion in the film to show us the dimension of Riley’s personality. The filmmaker's personification of emotion captures the reality of human psychology- but with their own artistic interpretation, of course, giving us lands of personality and a literal train of thought. We tend to be happy every day, like in the film, Joy tries to make Riley happy every day, even in the wrong moments she tries to get rid of Sadness because she thinks Sadness will ruin everything in headquarters and fears that Riley won’t be happy. But the truth is that Sadness helps our morals of what is “right and wrong.” How? During the film, Sadness expresses her feelings with Bing Bong when his rainbow rocket got thrown out to the pit of lost memories. Joy tries to tell Bing bong where the train of thought is, but he didn’t listen because he was miserable, so Sadness came in and listened to Bing Bong of how he feels and tells her the way. The reason Bing Bong listened to Sadness instead of Joy is because Sadness listened to the broken relationship between Bing Bong and his rainbow rocket while Joy tries to make him laugh and ignore that he is feeling devastated. In the article of “The Science of “Inside Out” By Dacher Keltner and Paul Ekman demonstrates how our “Emotions guides our perceptions of the world, our memories of the past and even our moral judgements of what is right and wrong.” Emotions support our decision during the right moments. A scene from the film is when Joy finally lets Sadness take control over the panel when Riley is in need of help when she was about to run away. The scene that also shows how our emotions guide through our perceptions is when Sadness let's go of Riley feelings that she wants to return to Minnesota and that is when Joy combines with Sadness to make love for Riley’s parents. Keltner and Ekman state,”Humans wants to be happy, and we want others to be happy”, but this sincere and wise sentiment can get lost in translation through our societal and cultural expressions. We misread signals and expectations during a moral decision. Acutely we are aware of every signal when we guide our emotions into, such as a moment of nostalgic memories or a moment when you are feeling in a certain right emotion like in the movie how Riley expresses her thoughts and feelings towards her parents.
