One of our nation’s earliest First Lady, Abigail Adams said “Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and diligence.” This quote is not just about learning but also about anthropologist. Anthropologist study and seek to learn the history of man to bring a better understanding about our past to the others. As we know, to gain knowledge about a subject, fieldwork, studies, research, and tests are done. Like most things, regulations are put into place to ensure the wellbeing of everyone affected. There is great controversy right now about the amount of freedom researchers should be allowed when conducting their investigations. The Institutional Review Boards are the ones that review and enforce a set of common rules for the research. These boards have been a bit lenient in their decisions in the past and should be more careful about granting extensive freedom to certain researchers.

This can be prevented by analysing the steps taken by the Institutional Review Board and trying to enhance them. A case known as the Tuskegee Experiment was one that involved a hidden study of syphilis among a group of African Americans that didn’t even know what they were being researched for. This is a perfect example of the vitality of the Institutional Review Boards, this act was inhumane and immoral. The worst part is, little to no nothing learned in this ‘study’. For those anthropologist and researchers who do whose studies have more advantages than disadvantages, the Boards can hinder the accuracy of the data gathered from people.
