Currently the government has a limited amount of what they can monitor on the internet, mostly relating to national security and, in some cases, less restrictions in order to solve court cases. While the government does already possess a good amount of the monitoring ability to keep the nation safe, there should still be an decrease in said monitoring limits. In court cases that require access to personal internet activity, problems often arise. For example, say that someone is being tried as a suspected terrorist affiliate or military spy of a belligerent nation. The court can’t condemn said person without proof and let's say that the proof is suspected to be on the persons phone or personal laptop. It is in this way that the nations safety can be put at risk due to the inability for the government to monitor internet content. While the solution would be to increase the government's ability to do such monitoring, a drastic change to the already flimsy balance could be devastating. Currently Net Neutrality has been a big topic in politics as of late. The situation is that Ajit Pai, a member of the FCC or Federal Communications Commission, has been pushing to repeal net neutrality as it stands which could in turn dangerously affect the previously mentioned balance in the government's ability to monitor internet content. Currently, through net neutrality, the government is able to see when someone searches keywords in order to prevent possible national threats. The government's ability to monitor other internet content is very situational. This current status allows for the government to protect national safety without invading peoples internet privacy and anonymity. The repeal would result in the invasion of privacy due to the internet no longer being a public domain. It is apparent that those who support the repeal plan to create barriers and put prices on even the most basic tools of
