One major difference between interrogating a suspect in a local criminal case versus interrogating a terrorist suspect in the time of war is that the interrogator in the first situation has much more time to work, which is vital to the success of rapport building. A rapport-based approach will produce better results in an interview or interrogation that takes place over a longer period of time (Alison et al., 2013). The reason for this is because the goal of rapport building is to develop that mutually respectful and trusting relationship, and to do so takes time. For example, people of Middle Eastern and Arab background have been raised with a focal point on the relationship experience; so building a sincere relationship between the interrogator and the suspect of Middle Eastern decent is a necessary element, during the interrogation process. To further represent this example, according to Gelles, McFadden, Borum, and Vossekuil (2006), Middle Eastern Arab males “think associatively” (p. 25). This means that they may jump from point to point in conversation, which differs from Western styles of thinking. Based on this finding, building a sincere relationship between the interrogator and a suspect of Middle Eastern decent is a necessary element in the pursuit of intelligence gathering. “Understanding the manner in which information is communicated is critical in analysing the reliability and usefulness of information offered during an interview or interrogation,” (Gelles, McFadden, Borum & Vossekuil, 2006, pp.
