Gender. What many people believe is just boy and girl. When a baby is born, we already identify the baby as one sex. What we do not expect is for the baby to come out different. The lines of gender for a person are no longer black and white. There is now a new word for people who are different called intersex. Intersex is the term for not socially accepted as normal sex anatomy.” Total number of people whose bodies differ from standard male or female-one in 100 births” (Dreger).In the article it states that the statistics can be different depending where you are located, but they are close. For example a man can have the male anatomy on the outside but the female anatomy on the inside. A female can also the same problem. Another example of intersex is you could look completely of one sex ,but just have an extra chromosome of the wrong genetic makeup .which then leads to problems in the future with reproduction. These examples are just some of the ways a person can be intersex. Gender has many different types. I have a personal story of a friend who has a genetic disorder that makes her have the female anatomy, but her body has too much testosterone for her anatomy to work. She did not get a period until she was thirteen, after doctors tested her and gave her medicine to take every day. Now she is twenty and is dealing with possibly of never having a child. This example really opens my eyes that it can be anyone and you may never know unless you are close to the person. Society sees intersex as wrong or too different to be accepted. Society is wrong in this outlook. A child cannot control his genetic make-up. The parents’ genetics must combine just right to be what is considered normal for society. The child that this happens to should not be to blame. Accepting everyone as their own individual is what society should
