Intervention Program for Adolescents
Intervention programs are based off problem solving for a population addressing a social problem. In order to address the social problem correctly intervention programs usually conduct an evaluation of the program to determine the program’s efficiency. This essay will compromise of a program evaluation of the John Avery Boys & Girls Club of Durham, North Carolina. The program evaluation will provide insight into the program’s history, targeted population, program’s efficiency, and recommendations.

The program still addresses the juvenile delinquency problem in the City of Durham, in addition, to intervention programs for at-risk youth in low-income families. The programs present day mission is to inspire and enable all youth of Durham, 6-18, particularly those at-risk to reach their potential of becoming productive, caring, and responsible citizens (“Mission,”2015). John Avery Boys and Girls Club program structure shares a similarity to social youth empowerment theory. The club welcomes you into a safe environment, requires participation and engagement, and responsibility sharing between program employees and participants which are three components of the social theory of youth empowerment (Hilfinger-Messias, Jennings, Mcloughlin, and Parra-Medina, 2008). John Avery Boys and Girls Club as a $ 10.00 a year fee and application process which includes access to after school and summer school programs. Children and adolescents wishing to enter the program whose household has low-income status can get in on scholarship. The club programs address barriers that low-income children and adolescents may face or have developed throughout their lives. John Avery Boys & Girls Club offer 21 programs in areas of health, sports (gang prevention), education, summer camp, technology, and character/leadership development. When entering the program test are given to determine program placement and when leaving test are given to determine the effectiveness of the program. The programs at the club address different barriers that participants may have to address. For instance, Club Tech is a skill based program which help participants develop skills in the field of technology. Through those development of skills the program hopes to make them successful in school and the job market. Another, program is Power Hour a tutoring program to assist with homework. Program is implemented to make the participant a self-learner through tips and materials provided through the program. These programs are funded by outside contributors, for instance, Power Hour is funded by Lenovo which also provided
