What if you decided one day to abandon everything you have and move into the wild, where were you go? In the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer a unique man named Chris McCandless chose an answer for this question, and decided to survive in the alaskan wilderness. Lots of people believed he was crazy ,but he wasn't alone. Chris is very similar to everett ruess which proves that he is not crazy. Chris and Everett are similar in many ways. First way you can say Chris and Everett are similar is that they both enjoy reading/ literature. Reading would be one of the major reason they took the risk they did in abandoned everything in there lives and living in nature. As people were trying to figure out how Everett died his that suggested that he must have got inspired by Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea “...A book Everett read many times...” (94) His father assumed that everett liked a book so much which inspired him to do what he did. As Jon Krakauer asked around about chris he met Charlie who had met chris he described him as “ Liked to read books” (42) Chris liked to read books to the point where people he met would identify him through his fascination for books. So you can see that neither chris nor everett where dumb or crazy, they were both highly interested in books.
Another way you could say chris and Everett are the same is that both of them enjoy nature a lot. They would rather be in the wild than in society. In one of the letters everett wrote to his brother he says “As to when I shall return civilization, it will not be soon. I think i have not tired of the wilderness...”(87) What Everett is trying to say that he has not gotten tired of nature and will not be returning to the city anytime soon. Also in the same letter everett wrote he said “I prefer...star sprinkles sky to a roof.” (87) He is obviously saying that he will rather sleep outside than in a comfort house where he can sleep under the stars. So as of now you can see Everett enjoys the nature to the point where he prefers it over a roof, and so does chris. Before alaska chris traveled all over the country hitch hiking. “ He hitched a ride to lake Tahoe hiked into sierra nevada, and spent a week walking north of the pacific crest”(29) This quote says a lot about how he like the nature, anyone who didn't enjoy nature would not spend so much time doing all these certain things that had to do with nature. As you can see Chris and Everett both enjoy the outdoors and nature and nature is always a good thing to enjoy. The last example of the similarities Chris and Everett had is that they both had no care for material things. Everett dropped out of high school and he spent the rest of his life traveling “Ruess would spend the remainder of his
