The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to prepare by SN2 reaction and characterize the iodide product and to prepare by SN1 reaction and characterize the chloride product. The iodide preparation by SN2 was performed by Jesseca Crawford and the chloride preparation by SN1 was performed by Kassidy Sullivan. The SN2 reaction utilized acetone as the solvent and reacted 50 mL of the limiting reagent, sodium iodide and 6 mL of n-butyl bromide to form sodium bromide and n-butyl iodide. 5.82 grams of n-butyl iodide was recovered, with a theoretical yield of 10.23 grams and 56.9% yield. Results from the infrared spectroscopy (IR) report of n-butyl iodide revealed a peak at 2962 which indicated a Csp3-H bond. Also, the IR revealed peaks
