Irena Sendler deserves the recommendation of being a hero who showed bravery and selflessness when she was willing to have other citizens receive Jewish children and stay in their home until World War II has come to an end. A hero is any brave, selfless, and courageous individual who takes initiative to help others and who does not expect anything in return. She fits this criteria because she saved over 2,500 Jewish children from the concentration camps (ghetto walls).
Sendler represented bravery by not hesitating to do what was right for the Jewish children of Otwock, Poland when she allowed Jewish children to enter citizen's homes for safety from the ghetto walls. In order to clarify, “Irena and her group of about 25 volunteers, mostly

For example, ” On October 20, 1943, the Gestapo came to Irena’s apartment; two German guards stood watch outside as nine pounded up the stairs. In the nick of time, Irena tossed the list of children’s name to a friend, who hid it under her arm. The Germans dragged Irena to Pawiak prison and beat her severely, fracturing her feet and legs.” (“Life in a Jar”) Selflessness means that they are concerned more with the wishes of others than with their personal wishes, and Irena Sendler's actions show that she had her mind set on saving the children from torture, and was not thinking about her own safety and well being. Preferably it seems like her main concern was to put the hopeless Jewish children in front of her healthy self. A further example is in the text it says,”After removing the children from the ghetto, Irena and her coworkers adopted them into the homes of Polish families or hid them in convents and orphanages.” Selflessness means to have no regard for oneself, and it appears that Irena was not thinking about herself and how much danger she would position herself in. Relatively it seems like she was focusing on the fact that there are more than 400,000 children in the concentration camp that need to be saved.
