Irena Sendler Jourdan Fenwick Can you believe it? How one female saved over 3,000 people, risking her own life for the safety of other people? This extravagant woman known as Irena Sendler saved thousands of children and families during the Holocaust. Irena was caught later on and managed to hide most of the evidence such as money and addresses. “She was placed in the notorious Piawiak prison, where she was constantly questioned and tortured. During the questioning she had her legs and feet fractured.” Irena was sentenced to death for her, “crimes,” but was later on freed because underground activists bribed the officials. What a woman right? Irena Sendler may have saved thousands of Jewish people, but there is a backstory to every hero. “Her father died in February 1917 from typhus contracted while treating patients whom his colleagues refused to treat, in fear of contracting the disease, among them many Jews.” Her Father was a doctor and she looked up to him greatly. How’d she do it? “Once the Warsaw Ghetto was formed, she started by saving the orphan children.” She made a slip saying that she was supposed to inspect the ghetto for sanitary reasons. Irena smuggled out some of the Jewish people. Irena realized she couldn’t take them all at once so she came to a conclusion to start making fake documents. “Irena Sendler saved 2,500 children from the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942-43.” She saved a massive chunk of people with just that. In order to get most of the children out she disguised them as packages. She would also take them out in ambulances with the help of the driver and her dog. When the children would whimper and cry, she would hit her dog on the paw causing it to bark and then the Nazi dogs would bark causing a loud chaotic chain reaction.
