Irony is a theme that has been brought out in the two short stories; The Cask of Amontillado and The Shot. The cask of Amontillado is loaded with situational, verbal and dramatic irony and so is The Shot. First, the example of situational irony in the Cask of Amontillado is that in many events one thing is expected to happen and then the opposite happens instead (pg 45). From its title we have the word cask that means a wine barrel but also the word casket comes from the same word, although Fortunato believes that he will at the end reach a cask of wine, he instead reaches his casket (pg 15). Fortunato is a word that means fortunate but in the story the character by that name is very unfortunate in his life thus showing us irony I his name. Fortunato also seems to be very joyous and this contrasts with the fate that waits him (Poe, 1846).
