In the famous play, “The Tragedy of Julius Caesar,” Shakespeare is able to recreate the most popular aspect of Roman history in a way that was and is still entertaining to its audiences, today. Marcus Brutus is one of the most intricate characters in the play. He faces the internal conflict of choosing between his loyalty to Rome and his friend, Julius Caesar. However, when he chooses to join the conspiratorial group, the reader automatically labels him as a villain. Brutus was a senator of a high position and respected by many, so to join a conspiratorial group would obviously jepedorize his position. On the other hand, Brutus had only good intentions and thought of Rome’s future as a whole. He did not kill Caesar out of jealousy, greed, or hate, he killed him out of love of Rome, which is why Brutus is a hero rather than a villain. In order to be a villain, the person must be someone who intentionally tried to harm for purposes that suit their own needs. Variously, a hero is someone who is admired for his/her achievements and noble qualities, which is what Brutus had.
