Is Cheerleading really a sport? Cheerleading began as a form of protest as a more subtle way to gain independence. In the 1860’s, Students from Great Britain began to cheer and chant in unison for their favorite athletes at sports events. Soon the gesture of support spread across the globe. Organized Cheerleading started as an activity only for males. In 1923 at the University of Minnesota, women were allowed into cheerleading. Cheerleading should be considered a sport just like football .

Cheerleading is most definitely is a sport because they train and exercise like any other sport. The cheerleaders have to go through rigorous training and practice all the time to perfect their routines displayed in the games. For example Cheerleaders practice for hours after school, which is 78% their free time. The American Medical Association says cheerleading should be considered a sport because of its rigor and risk.
