Is Healthcare a Right or Responsibility? Did you know 33 million people in the United States did not have health insurance in 2014 according to the U.S. Census Bureau? There is a lot of controversy in the U.S. today whether healthcare is a right that should be provided by the government or a responsibility obtained by the individual. Many changes have occurred in healthcare over the last few years, but there are still numerous problems that remain unsolved. The federal government continues to try to address these issues, but I think the government should not determine whether an individual has healthcare. I believe healthcare should be a right because everyone deserves heathcare for themselves and their family; however, this right should be the responsibility and the choice of the individual to obtain it without the role of government. Healthcare in the United States has many obstacles and factors that we have yet to overcome. According to the World Health Organization the United States spent more on healthcare per person ($8,608) than any nation in 2011. The Affordable Care Act was put into place in the United States led by Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. This was intended to increase the quality and affordability of health insurance, but it had many negative consequences. Under the Affordable Care Act, many people now have to pay a higher premium than before. Those same people that pay higher receive less coverage than they did before. Many businesses are cutting employees hours due to the business having to pay for their medical coverage.
