It is an understatement to say that asylum seekers are is the hot topic of media and politicians in Australia over recent times. It has become the peak of controversy since the introduction of the government’s new law to send back many boats back to Indonesia. Opinions of this policy varies from “Degrading” to “Effective”. I believe that this law is a quite hysterical response because of the government’s idea of overpopulation, however the question is, could this hysteria become reality if it is not controlled?
The new law that was introduced “Operation Sovereign Borders” is not as new as it may seem. Before Julia Gillard was Prime minister, there was a policy called the “pacific solution”. This was similar to this new law except this one is sending the boats back to other smaller Islander areas, such as Manus Island. This old law was effective as statistics show. In 2002 only one person came via an unauthorized boat. That is a significant difference in comparison to the new statistics which shows that 20,587 people came last year. The major number difference is due to the suspension of the policy. It is obvious that this old policy is effective, but why is this heating up tabloids and other media. This is where people criticize the governments’ moral compass. The living standards of these people are atrocious and unacceptable. This is not the only problem to consider. It is illegal to refuse asylum seekers refuge to Australia no matter how they have come here. This contradicts the new law.
