The covenant with God promised the Israelites land, and many descendants. This covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob does apply to Joseph. This point is made clear in Genesis because God favors Joseph over everyone else. In addition, God planned for Joseph to be sent to Egypt to save the Israelites. Finally, Joseph makes an oath with the other Israelites just as Abraham, Isaac, and Israel did with God. Taken together, the Genesis account of Joseph’s life shows that the covenant with Abraham continues with Joseph. God favors Joseph and takes care of him throughout his accounts in Genesis. For example, in Gn 39:1-6 when Joseph is enslaved in Egypt God favors Joseph and Joseph’s overseer sees that and then makes Joseph an overseer. Another instance of God favoring Joseph is in Gn 39:20-22, Joseph was thrown in prison but God was with him and the warden favored Joseph so Joseph would become in charge of the other prisoners. While God is not mentioned in Gn 41:41, he especially takes care of Joseph when Pharaoh places Joseph in charge of Egypt. Joseph acknowledges God for sending him to Egypt and being in charge of Egypt. Joseph acknowledges God in Gn 45:4-7, when Joseph reveals himself to his brothers he tells them that it was God’s plan to send him to Egypt and save their lives during the famine. Joseph credits God again in Gn 50:19-21, Joseph says that God brought good out of his brothers selling him because Joseph had to save the lives of the Israelites and bring them to Egypt. Joseph forgives his brothers for selling him to Egypt because it was apart of God’s plan to become a ruler over Egypt and preserve the covenant by keeping Abraham’s descendants alive during the
