Isabel is a young Cuban girl from the novel “Refugee” by Alan Gratz. She is portrayed as being a caring and brave girl. Her family is struggling to survive in Cuba. Food is starting to get scarce in Cuba. Isabel still has hope and takes care of her family during this situation. Throughout the whole story, she loves her family and always wants them together. Furthermore, Isabel is brave enough to save anyone who is in trouble.

Isabel cares and loves her family and doesn’t want to see it apart. On page 176, she is distressed about her mom leaving and her grandpa leaving “This wasn’t the way things were supposed to happen! Her family was supposed to be together”. The theme throughout the story is important and it's a big factor in her whole personality.
