Is there ever a moment in life too think on what it’s like to be isolated and survive on a island? In Island of the Blue Dolphins By Scott O’Dell which is based on a true story named after Juana Maria (which is Karana in the story) tells how she lived 18 years on the island by herself until a captain found her. Throughout the story it shows how Karana is stranded on an island and makes new friends and new enemies. Being isolated shows how strong someone can be without anyone else and shows that failure is never an option. In life everyone loses someone else at one point, but the grief guilts the minds of others. “The thought of being alone on the island while so many suns rose went slowly back into the sea filled my heart with loneliness. I had not felt so lonely before because I was sure that the ship would return as Matasaip had said it would. Now my hopes were dead. Now I was really alone. I could not eat much, nor could I sleep without dreaming terrible dreams.” This quote claims that Karana missed the ship of her native family and friends and how she never felt as lonely has she did before. It made me happy to have them swimming around the canoe, and though my hands had begun to bleed from the chafing of the paddle, just watching them made me forget the pain. I was very lonely before they appeared, but now I felt that I had friends with me and did not feel the same.” The quote states that Karana forgot her pain from being lonely and dolphins are a special animal to her which makes her have friends. Also the island is shaped as a dolphin. Everybody doesn’t need to have friends of the same species, which shows the compassion and caring need to
