In the short story “The Harp” written by Carol Shields the protagonist has to deal with her feelings of isolation and loneliness while recovering from an accident. The protagonist first shows signs that she feels isolated and alone when she is in her hospital bed and she starts crying because of the pain of her accident “and also because I had not been invited to the accountants’ party, never mind that I am not an accountant myself or acquainted with one”. The fact of her being upset for not being invited to a party for people she does not know is a clear indicator of her having feelings of loneliness; in addition, to it not being very rational.
