Option Three Of Mice and Men Essay

Throughout the novel ‘Of Mice and Men’. Steinbeck showed many characters that represent certain emotions, but to be specific one that really stood out, is the aspect of being lonely. For example Candy, Crooks and Curley’s wife are advocates of showing this emotion by there actions and speech. In my personal opinion, Crooks had the toughest time. He’s a black man in 1920’s America, he’s served on the ranch a-lot longer than others, and doesn’t even have a roommate. Which only makes his loneliness and isolation worse. The quotes that I have chosen for Crooks is “I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’he gets sick…” and “Sure you could play horseshoes till it got dark, but then you

The oldest of the characters, separated from his wife, a disabled amputee and gains happiness from his dog who is put down for being a no good, old, smelly and blind dog. There’s a resemblance between Candy himself, and his dog. “The old man squirmed uncomfortably. Well-hell! I had him so long. Had since he was a pup. She ran away from her home, because she figured she’d get further in her life just by leaving where she was in the first place. So, she marries Curley a man who truly has no care for her and doesn’t let her socialize with any of the men on the ranch. she realizes she made a mistake. She makes the statement that “You bindle bums think you’re re so damn good. Whatta ya think I am, a kid? I could of went with shows. Not jus’one neither. An a guy tol’me he could put me in pitchers.” This is her speaking of her opportunities to be in shows, which shows her obliviousness, subtle promiscuousness and loneliness all in one. Throughout the story she is ignored by characters and seen as a problem, because she’s married to the terrible Curley and seems as though she could cause problems between the men and Curley. Later on in the novel she goes on to say “I tell you I ain’t used to livin like this I coulda’ made somethin’ of myself...Maybe I will yet…” this quote shows not only how she lies to impress Lennie, but is making sure she spills all of her feelings out, because she doesn’t speak to anyone on the ranch besides
