During these parts of the story, Susan starts her in-and-out of jail cycle. After reading these chapters, Susan’s story has left me feeling empty. It’s hard to describe, because as a person who has never been exposed to the things Susan has, I feel detached from her at times. That being said, even though the detachment I feel from Susan’s experiences are present, I still empathize with the emotions of isolation and constant depression she deals with. Susan’s relationship with James, it marked the beginning of her descent to isolation. In the beginning of the chapter, Susan is the one who emotionally isolates herself from everyone else, “I’d severed ties with everyone I’d known” (47).
