When I read this poem, it reminded me of the film It’s Kind of a Funny Story. It is based on a novel by author Ned Vizzini that wrote this book to talk about his experiences on depression and anxiety. I am able to connect this poem with this film, because Craig Gilner, the main character of It’s Kind of Funny Story, also had trouble dealing with this feeling of despair he constantly carried on his shoulders. He was in love with his best friend’s girlfriend and did not know what to do or how to act upon his feelings. Whenever she would come into the picture, he would question himself on the fact that if the love he feels is worth the risk. His existence on earth was temporary to him but his main concern was whether or not he would be able to make his parents proud while doing he loathed or “disappoint” them by pursuing an opposite career. Ultimately, love is part of the reason why he fell into that depression but it is also something that brought him out. He found someone beautiful that he could fall in love with while being able to better himself as an individual. Once he started to realize the power love had over him, he was able to ignore all of feelings and thoughts.
